Moosh Form Guide – How to Read Horse Racing Form
The Moosh form guide explains how to read and interpret horse racing form figures. Learn what the form numbers mean and how Moosh uses them to find winners.
What Is Horse Racing Form?
In horse racing, "form" refers to a horse's recent race history — how it has performed in its recent starts. Understanding form is the foundation of all successful betting, and it's central to how Moosh selects every tip.
Form figures appear next to a horse's name in the race card and are read from left (oldest) to right (most recent). For example, a horse showing 2-1-3-1 has finished 2nd, 1st, 3rd, and most recently 1st.
Reading Form Figures
- 1–9 — finishing position in that race
- 0 — finished outside the top 9
- F — fell (jump racing)
- U — unseated rider
- P — pulled up (didn't complete)
- - — season break between figures
- / — year break between figures
How Moosh Uses Form in Tip Selection
Raw form figures are just the starting point. Moosh digs deeper into how a horse achieved its form — was it a close-run thing, or did it win easily? Is it improving or declining? Was the form achieved on similar ground and distance to today?
Key questions Moosh asks when assessing form:
- Has the horse run well at this course before?
- Does the form stack up against today's rivals?
- Is the horse on an upward trajectory?
- Did it perform on similar going to today's conditions?
- How does it compare on speed ratings to today's field?
Form and the Moosh Tip Selection Process
Form analysis feeds into every aspect of the Moosh tip generation process — from identifying the NAP of the day to assessing whether a horse warrants each-way consideration. The full Moosh betting strategy guide explains how to combine form reading with staking decisions.
Assessing Form for Different Race Types
Form assessment differs between race types. In handicap races, the official rating is as important as raw form figures. In flat racing, speed ratings and Timeform figures add precision. In jump racing, jumping ability must be assessed alongside form positions.
How much racing form does Moosh look back at?
Typically the last 6 runs, but older form on the same course or in the same conditions is also considered.
